Amman

Amman, the Capital of Jordan, known in biblical times as
Rabbath Ammon and under the Ptolemies as Philadelphia.
Amman still sits splendidly on its traditional seven hills (jabels).
You can visit the Roman Theatre dating back to the 2nd century
A.D. Also nearby are the ruins of the Citadel Hill and the
archeological, costume and folklore museums.

Aqaba is Jordan's winter resort on the Red Sea. Here you
will find fine sandy beaches, excellent for all year round
bathing, water sports, and a fabulous underwater world of coral
reefs and tropical fish for the keen diver.

Jerash

Jerash, only half an hour drive north of Amman, was known
as the "Pompeii of the East" and is now the most
beautifully preserved Greek-Roman city in existence. There
are grand ruins - the Temples of Artemis and Zeus, a vast Roman
forum, Hadrian's Triumphal Arch, and a mile long street of
columns.

Kerak

About 125 km. from Amman along one of the most historic
and scenic roads in the world - the ancient King's Highway
- is the Crusader castle of Kerak, imposing for its
massive size and awesome location on the rim of a plateau
3,400 ft. above sea level.

30 km. south of Amman is Madaba where you can see some of the
finest Byzantine mosaics in the world. Most famous is the
6th century mosaic map of the Holy Land, possibly the
oldest such map in existence. Nearby is historic Mt. Nebo, the
site where Moses stood and had his only look into the Land
of Israel and where you can enjoy a remarkable view of the
Jordan Valley and the Dead Sea.

Jordan's most exciting and adventurous travel experience is the
fascinating trip to Petra, hidden away in the encircling craggy
rock mountains south of the Dead Sea.A three-hour drive
over the desert highway brings you to this "Rose Red
City" half as old as time, carved from rock over 2,000
years ago by the Nabateans. It can be reached by horse and
by foot through a narrow defile or "siq" flanked
by towering cliffs. The sudden view of Petra's most spectacular
monument, the "Khazneh" or Treasury at the end
of the siq is a dramatic sight. Other unique monuments carved
right into the vari-colored mountains are the high places,
the gigantic "dier" or monastery, and numerous
Roman-style tombs.
